Editorial

Faced with the technological questions posed by the Fixed/Mobile Convergence market, this third issue of Gateways looks at the different strategic approaches and technical solutions offered by Femto Cell and 3G.

Because there is no one simple answer to complex issues
like these, we have explored the
various possibilities to come up with some practical solutions.

Market Focus: Analysis and prospects for the Fixed/Mobile Convergence (FMC) market

If the latest market research is to be believed, almost one in three phone calls made by private individuals from their homes are made from a GSM. The same is true of businesses, where over 30% of employees' calls are made from mobiles. These figures back up analysts' recent forecasts for a boom in the Fixed/Mobile Convergence (FMC) market, with cumulative annual growth rates expected to top 170% between 2008 and 2011.

In the face of this colossal growth potential, there are two technological solutions to choose from: Femto Cell and Wi-Fi. But which should you choose? What advantages do they offer? These are the questions explored at the recent Broadband World Forum Europe 2008, and to which this third edition of Gateways will try to find some answers.

Whilst technology can provide solutions, it cannot work miracles. To date, there is no standard solution to be recommended to operators. Depending on the operator's history, installed base, rate of coverage and future strategy, either Femto Cell or Wi-Fi will be the more suitable option.

For mobile telephony operators offering an integrated voice/data/ADSL service, the key issue is usually optimizing 3G coverage, especially inside homes or office buildings.

The technological advantages available with Femto Cell are tempting: improved network coverage, the possibility of offering 3G services to users via their standard home IP connection, and network decongestion.

But Femto Cell is by no means a universal solution. Internet Service Providers and mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) looking to boost their profit margins in absolute terms see the development of Wi-Fi networks as a real outlet. Why? Quite simply because the use of VoIP - and subsequently the activation of Wi-Fi by users for their home communications - gives the MVNO the chance to reduce structural line rental costs and offer end users a more attractively priced package.

In this business model, the second strategic stage may involve the creation of a community of Wi-Fi users. By accepting the essential conditions of the "MVNO community", users agree for the Wi-Fi network to be opened up to all the community's members. In doing so, they allow the MVNO to create an intermeshed Wi-Fi network for Data and VoIP communications.
The business model has still to be developed, but the advantages are already plain to see:
- The MVNO offers packages at unbeatable prices, for example free Internet and mobile communications for the price of a landline.
- The attractive rates draw new members to the community. The network and therefore the MVNO's Wi-Fi coverage expand.
- The result is a big drop in structural line rental costs: the MVNO enjoys higher margins in absolute terms, and an optimized business model.

Whatever the operator's history and development strategy, Bewan systems has the right technological solution for every kind of business model. To find out more and talk to one of our Femto Cell or Wi-Fi experts, send an email to: international@bewan.com

Zoom on Bewan's Fixed/Mobile Convergence solutions: Femto Cell or Wi-Fi?

In response to the strategic challenges facing integrated operators, mobile telephony operators, MVNOs and ISPs, Bewan systems has expanded its R&D department and invested heavily in technological developments linked to the coexistence of 3G and Wi-Fi radio frequencies, as well as QoS management.

Femto Cell iBox

With many experts currently raising questions about
interfacing and integration with Femto Cell, Bewan has striven to find an answer to the issue of coexisting 3G and Wi-Fi frequencies, whilst eliminating thermal dissipation problems. The result?
A Femto Cell module built into a home DSL gateway.

This unique technological approach enables operators to reduce rollout, maintenance and after-sales costs, as the 3G antenna built into the box remains active permanently. The 3G network is therefore available round the clock.
iBox multi-SSID

With its three distinct SSIDs, the Bewan iBox can be used to create three separate Wi-Fi networks, each allocated to a specific task:
- 1 SSID for GSM Wi-Fi telephony (VoWiFi)
- 1 SSID for the data hot spot reserved for guests
- 1 SSID for the user's mobile hardware

And to guarantee 100% VoWiFi communications, Bewan has incorporated unique Quality of Service (QoS) management over Wi-Fi. Each SSID is allocated bandwidth to which an order of priority is assigned. Using this type of management
technology, Wi-Fi communications can be optimized according to the client's ADSL bitrate.

Event: Broadband World Forum Europe 2008

The eighth edition of the Broadband World Forum Europe trade fair took place from 30 September to 2 October 2008.

During the fair, Bewan gave a sneak preview of its two new home gateways, the Bewan FemTo Box and the Bewan MiniBox, as well as a new version of its Bewan iBox enhanced with 3G/3G+ functions.

Against a background of rapid technology advances, the 5,830 participants discussed
developments in the Broadband market, Unified Communications and particularly the challenges and solutions provided by Femto Cell, Fixed/Mobile Convergence and WiMAX. There was a big focus on the rollout and monetization of services offered increasingly frequently in operators' triple play packages.
