Editorial

Myself and everyone at Bewan systems would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave to our first edition of Gateways, the quarterly newsletter dedicated to the EMEA market for Broadband solutions.
This second edition is a chance to look at recent developments in the Quadruple Play market and the growth of TR-069, which are set to be the big talking points at the Broadband Forum World Exhibition in late September. We also very much look forward to seeing you at Brussels Expo, from 30 September to 2 October, where you will be able to get a first-hand look at all these new technologies at the Bewan stand N°375, Hall 7.

Market Focus : Analysis and prospects for value added services in the European Quadruple Play market

With the decline in the value of the fixed telephony in Europe and the rapid expansion of the mobile market, which is certainly impressive in volume terms but disappointing from a value standpoint, average monthly revenue per user is running out of steam. In a difficult economic and competitive context, the constant quest for improved ARPU is turning into something of a Holy Grail.
Representing total sales in excess of 16 billion dollars in 2006 with annual growth of over 80%, analysts are pointing to the broadband market for value added services for end users as THE ideal solution for ensuring ROI for technological investments.
Following fixed-audiovisual convergence (triple play offers), now is the time of fixed-mobile, mobile-audiovisual and mobile-automated home convergence. Built-in 3G/3G+ support in Internet
boxes (see article in Gateways N°1), centralised and remote management of DSL modems with TR-069 and the development of IP accessories managed by web applications in new home and office gateways mean ISPs are already able to offer their subscribers an expanded range of services, including home automation, multimedia and video surveillance. And with remote management of firmware updates, rolling out and maintaining a subscriber fleet has never been cheaper or easier. It's the perfect solution for enhancing your product range and boosting customer loyalty whilst optimizing your ROI... For more information, click here.

Zoom : Focus on the Internet box ecosystem

By opting to include up to four USB ports in its home platform, Bewan is giving operators the possibility of developing a host of customer services, such as local or remote file and printer accessibility and sharing, video surveillance system control and immediate, continuous access to the Internet.

How does it work?
The Bewan iBox uses one of its four USB ports to connect a 3G/3G+ key directly.
As the platform's firmware includes 3G/3G+
key drivers, the user's Internet access is managed automatically and in complete transparency.

Advantages
  • New subscribers can connect to the Internet straight away
When users sign up to a DSL subscription, their first experience of using the Box will be crucial to their overall judgment of the service.
With the Bewan iBox, there’s no need for eager new subscribers to wait around for their DSL line to be activated – they can get online straight away, as soon as they receive their home terminal. All that's needed is a 3G/3G+ key, connected directly to the Bewan iBox. The user can connect to the Internet immediately, whilst waiting for their DSL line to be activated. As soon as the line is activated, the 3G/DSL switchover is automatic and transparent for the user.
  • Continuity of service
DSL line connection stability is the ultimate yardstick by which end users judge the performance of their ISP. Dropped connections mean unhappy customers. With the Bewan iBox, continuity of service is assured. The box supports the 3G/3G+ USB key, allowing the user's connection to be switched automatically to 3G in the event their DSL line goes down. The whole operation is totally transparent for the subscriber, and the user experience positive.

Event : Broadband World Forum Europe 2008

From 30 September to 2 October 2008, Bewan will be at the Broadband World Forum Europe 2008, the leading European meeting of professionals in the Broadband Internet and Telecoms sector.
During the fair, Bewan will be giving a sneak preview of its two new home gateways, the Bewan FemTo Box and Bewan MiniBox, and also a new version of its Bewan iBox enhanced with 3G/3G+ functions. The French manufacturer will also be presenting a complete ecosystem of accessories piloted by Bewan Home Center, a web application that offers operators a simple, effective way of managing automated home systems.
To give visitors a better understanding of the advantages of the new services offered by its pioneering Internet boxes, Bewan will display its solutions under actual operating conditions, in an environment similar to the end user's. For more information, click here.
